Does instant oatmeal spike blood sugar?

Moderately. Instant oatmeal has a high GI of 82, and a 234 g serving (1 cup cooked) has a medium glycemic load of 19. Instant oats are rolled thinner and precooked so they soften in a minute, and that extra processing puts their average GI in the high band — well above rolled or steel-cut oats.

GI vs GL for instant oatmeal

The glycemic index (GI) compares how fast the carbohydrate in a food raises blood sugar against pure glucose (100), using a fixed amount of carbohydrate. The glycemic load (GL) adds the other half of the story — how much carbohydrate a normal serving actually contains: GI × available carbs Ă· 100. For instant oatmeal: 82 × 23 g Ă· 100 ≈ 19.

That figure is an average reported in the 2021 international GI tables (“Instant oat porridge, mean of four foods”). The 2008 tables gave a similar picture: four instant oat porridge studies averaged 79. Flavored packets with added sugar carry more carbohydrate than the plain oats shown here.

How to eat instant oatmeal with less of a spike

    • Buy plain packets and add your own toppings; flavored varieties add sugar on top of an already high-GI base.
    • Make overnight oats with old-fashioned rolled oats instead — just as quick in the morning, with a lower-GI oat.
    • Add a spoon of nut butter or a handful of walnuts; fat slows how fast the meal turns into blood sugar.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the glycemic index of instant oatmeal?

Instant oatmeal has a glycemic index of 82, which is high. That figure is an average reported in the 2021 international GI tables (“Instant oat porridge, mean of four foods”). A 234 g serving (1 cup cooked) contains about 23 g of available carbohydrate, giving a glycemic load of 19 (medium).

Is instant oatmeal good for prediabetes?

Plain instant oatmeal is convenient but raises blood sugar faster than less-processed oats. If you rely on it, choose unsweetened packets, stick to one, and add protein and fat to the bowl.

Is instant oatmeal bad for blood sugar?

It raises blood sugar faster than other oats. Instant oat porridge averaged a GI of 82 in the 2021 tables, versus 58 for rolled oats and 52 for steel-cut oats. One plain packet with protein on the side is a reasonable occasional breakfast.
